Starkey: Space Traitor Volume 1

Starkey is Philadelphia’s foremost dubstep, grime and bass artist. His unique take on these sounds has spread around the world and has proved to be a massive hit wherever he tours. His work is always progressive, dynamic, and pushing the limits of sound technology; he has even trademarked his own unique ‘Street Bass’ sound along with a handful of other artists (think Hudson Mohawke and Rustie). His debut album for Planet Mu, “Ephemeral Exhibits“, was extremely well-received and the follow up “Ear Drums and Black Holes“, released earlier this year, was even more successful. Starkey is the co-owner of Slit Jockey Records and a member of the Seclusiasis crew. Despite his record affiliation however, he is best known for his productions full to the brim with futuristic crunk, hip-hop and elements of UK-centric grime and dubstep.

Starkey’s latest release, “ Space Traitor EP Vol.1“, is a 12 track album (13 including the NastyNasty remix) jam-packed full of exciting space-beat adventures. With a wonderful array of originals by Starkey accompanied by a killer lineup of remixes by extremely talented producers, you really can’t go wrong with Space Traitor. Check out some of the tracks included in the post and if you enjoy the album I highly recommend swinging over to Addictech and grabbing the full release. +Verb, a regular on SubSynthesis, has an absolutely gorgeous, melodic downtempo version of Starkey’s “Paradise” on this EP that is a total necessity for any true lover of his music.

Interview with Starkey:
Credit to Laizi of Data Transmissions for the interview with Starkey:

So, give us a bit of an idea of how you first got involved with making electronic music?
I was interested in electronic music or more experimental production from a pretty early age, but I really only started making my own electronic music when I went to college for music production.  I got a PC and installed Acid version 1. I had a Korg N1 that I had running through the audio input on the back of the PC – no real sound card, just ran the audio out to the bookshelf speakers that came with my PC. My early tracks pretty much sounded like trip-hop meets Mogwai…I guess it’s not too far off from some of the stuff I’m writing still to this day.

I’m guessing that being from Philly hip-hop and RnB have played their part in sculpting your sound?
Yeah definitely.  I went through a period where I really didn’t listen to much hip-hop and RnB though; I was really into indie rock and hardcore punk rock and all that. At the same time I was playing jazz and studying classical music as well, so my mind was elsewhere.  But now I probably listen to more hip-hop than anything else.

There does seem to be a kind of sci-Fi theme running throughout your work and the space age sounds you create. Has the fascination always been with you?
When I was growing up I was all about Star Wars, so yeah. I think I’ve always been interested in science-fiction. My parents own the oldest drive-in movie theatre in the world, so I’ve always been around movies. The idea of looking at the possibilities of the future and technology has always interested me, so I gravitated towards those kinds of films. I’m also into a lot of concert electronic music and the experimental tape music from the 20th Century, and a lot of that material has a sci-fi theme running throughout it. People who are drawn to experimentation, I think, are also the type to think about what the future holds for technology, life, politics, basically what the world may look like in the distant and not-so-distant future.

The new release, Space Traitor Volume One, is a pretty hefty package – were the 12 or so tracks planned from the start or did it grow naturally?
This music was definitely written with the intention of putting together these 2 releases, but I wasn’t quite sure which tracks would make each release. I’m actually still working on Volume 2, so we’ve yet to decide on a tracklist. I think when you’re determining which tracks to put on a release, you have to think about which ones work well together.  From the start, we all agreed that Robot Hands was going to be on the first volume, then we built the EP around that tune. Lenses is the only track that was around when I was compiling Ear Drums and Black Holes, everything else was written after I finished up that album. Lenses was one of those tracks that we thought about putting on the last album, but it ended up getting cut.  I always liked the track, and it got a pretty good response when I finished one studio mix last year with it…so we figured, why not, let’s put it on the Space Traitor series.  The way it’s turning out, Volume 2 will most likely be a bit more epic and “song” oriented than Volume 1, which I feel has a bit more immediacy to the writing. <ore “beats” than songs.  But then again, Paradise with Anneka is on there, so I’m probably just making this up in my head.  Haha.

With 6 remixes, from the likes of Kaiser, Egyptrixx, ARP101 and more, were these a group of artists you hand in mind from the start?
Yeah.  When I choose remixers for my projects, I choose people whose music I enjoy, and I like to play out.  Egyptrixx has remixed for a project on my label, Seclusiasis in the past… and Kaiser is an artist on my Slit Jockey label, so there’s definitely a lot of connections with my releases. Rudi Zygadlo also released an album on Planet Mu last year, and I did a remix for his Resealable Friendship single, so it’s always a family affair with the releases I do.

This is the second time we’ve seen you work with Anneka. How did you guys get involved with one another?
Well I met Anneka when I was staying with my friend, Ital Tek, in Brighton. But we didn’t start working together for probably a year or so after that. When I was working on Ear Drums and Black Holes, I was having a discussion with Mike Paradinas about vocalists to work with and her name came up.  I heard the track she had done for Vex’d, and immediately was interested in working with her.  She’s got a really special voice and writes some great lyrics.  I’m a huge fan of hers.

Any other artists you’ve got in mind for future collaborations?
Well I just produced a track for Eligh’s new album Grey Crow called Suffocate. And we’ve been talking about doing a few tunes next year together. There’s a bunch of other things in the works right now as well, but nothing concrete that I can actually tell you about at this time.  I love working with other artists and producers, so it’s definitely something I see myself doing more and more.  I’ve actually been in the studio in London this past year writing with Guy Sigsworth. We’ve been collaborating on a few things together which are really exciting. We found that we have really similar tastes in music and I think when we’re sitting down to write together, there’s a different type of creativity that takes shape. I had always been used to working alone, so you’re kind of thrown out of your comfort zone at first.  But once you get past that, it can be really exciting. I’m also collaborating with producer Aaron Levinson in Philly on a new artist project that’s more in his spectrum of experience, Latin music…so that should be really interesting.

Any current producers/artists you’re particularly rating at the moment?
There are so many, but I’ll just give you a shortlist. I know I’m probably forgetting people in here, but here we go.  First off, obviously everyone on the Seclusiasis and Slit Jockey record labels… Kastle, DNAEBEATS, Stagga, Halp, Sduk, Kaiser, Mestizo, BD1982 and of course Dev79 who I run Seclusiasis with.  OK here’s a quick rundown… Eprom, Slugabed, J-Sweet, Badness, Kozzie, Lex Luger, Tinie Tempah, Distal, Scratcha DVA, AC & Dell, Taz, Terror Danjah, Teddy, Ghetts, Kanye West, TRC… the list goes on and on.

Your tracks have always been well received here in the UK – any favourite spots to play out?
In the UK…I have a lot of fun in Bristol usually.  I have a lot of friends there and the parties are almost always pretty lively.  Last time I played Fabric I was in Room 1, and that was a lot of fun as well.

Do find any difference in terms of what’s well received over here compared to the US?
When I play hip-hop in the US it goes over a bit better in general, because in the US, hip-hop is the “dance” music.  That’s the only thing I really notice, but then again, most people who know my stuff, know to expect that in my sets.

Your label, Seclusiasis, has been putting out some great stuff, by the likes of BD1982 and Kastle – how’s that going and what’s coming out in the future?
We’ve got a lot of great things planned for 2011, including some new material from Kastle, some new Street Bass Anthems stuff…it’s really exciting.  On Slit Jockey we’re dropping Sduk’s debut album as well as a ridiculous release from Stagga amongst other things.

So, what’s Starkey got in store for us in the coming months?
Hopefully some exciting stuff.  Haha.  I’m really happy with what’s been coming out of the studio.  In the immediate future there’s of course Space Traitor Volume 2 as well as a 12” for No Hats No Hoods that I’m finishing up.

And lastly, where can we find you playing in the near future?
I’m doing US dates for the rest of year… Miami, NYC, Philly, etc.  But I’ll be back in the UK and Europe hopefully early next year.

Sovereign-Sect: Fourtunate

“Hailing from the frozen Tundra of Fargo, Sovereign-Sect has taken the reins and pioneered one of the most underrated, vibrant live electronic scenes in the midwest. The Sect has played alongside such acts as Marty Party, Mimosa, Ana Sia, Kraddy, Two Fresh, Pnuma Trio, Signal Path, EOTO, SPECTRE, OTT, Nasty Nasty, Mochipet, Eprom, Eskmo, Lynx and Janover, Beats Antique, Propa Tingz, Unlimited Gravity, Fresh2Death and Vibesquad, and have become a staple for bass music lovers from hundreds of miles away. With the recent addition of two new members to the previous producer/drummer combo, Sovereign Sect is delving into new realms of live production and improvised digital controllerism – tactfully fusing live performance aspects of traditional bands with the dance-friendly, musical-riot-enducing elements hip-hop, and bass culture music. Sovereign Sect is a sonic phenomenon not to be missed” – Sovereign-Sect SoundCloud

I first heard about Sovereign-Sect from Unlimited Gravity who told me I should look into them for any future Colorado events. After communicating with them briefly and getting in touch with their friend Jeff Hild, I am completely convinced that Sovereign-Sect is going to be one of the big names in 2011.  Everyone reading this should swing by the Sovereign-Sect BandCamp and download their Free Debut EP, “Fourtunate”. The album has a wide variety of music on it, all of it excellent and perfect for getting a party started. Absolutely anyone, ranging from the private listener to the festival promoter, should have their eyes on Sovereign-Sect, this is an extremely talented group of artists with a rich musical background who are bringing a whole hell of a lot to the table. Don’t believe me? Check them out for yourself!

Sovereign-Sect – Pushin’ Rhymes:

Sovereign-Sect – Nickle & Dime:

Sovereign-Sect – Bucketgrinder:

Sovereign-Sect has been a staple in the electronic music scene for several years and has progressed through an array of musical stages to reach where they are now. What started as a funky jam-based band is now a party-raging electronic act embracing a  multitude of music elements and themes from the electronic world. The bands current formation consists of 4 members…. Chris Patano, Alex Schaleben, and Lucas Petz (All Producers) with Seth Holden on Drums.

The current manifestation of Sovereign-Sect started when Alex Schaleben and Lucas Petz decided to join forces with the other two of Sovereign Sect. Alex used to play percussion with the original five piece and Lucas was a new addition to the team. All of the members grew up in West Fargo, ND and are deeply embedded in the local music scene. The very first gig together with all four of the current members was at the Bella Vida Festival where they were recieved with wild cries and dancing crowds. The merge had a dramatic impact on the overall sound of the group and definitely gave it the more hyphy lazer-bass sound that you hear in some of the newer tracks like Big Ballin, Pushin Rhymes, and DMT Data. From there on out, the parties became wilder, the crowds got bigger, and Sovereign-Sect slowly started focusing on making a HUGE impact on the local electronic scene.

After only six months of working together they have already gained critical acclaim and have played with an exceptionally talented lineup of artists including Lynx and Janover, Fresh2Death, Mochipet, NastyNasty, Unlimited Gravity, Signal Path, Propatingz, and many more. If Sovereign-Sect plays a show, it is absolutely guaranteed that they will have the crowd going wild by the end of their set. No matter what slot Sovereign-Sect plays, they will depart with everyone thinking they were the headliner!

Check out some cool videos of their progression as a musical entity, featuring all stages of the bands evolution:

Sovereign-Sect Pre-Reformation (Jam/Funk)

Sovereign-Sect Mid-Reformation (Chris Patano and Seth Holden, summer 2009)

Sovereign-Sect Post-Reformation (At the Bella Vida Music Festival mentioned above)

…and of course, at one of Sovereign-Sects’ favorite spots to rage, Sovereign-Sect opening for Mochipet in 2010: they absolutely slay the crowd at this show!

Ben Samples: Choose Your Own Adventure LP

Ben Samples is one of the staples discussed when throwing around names in the glitch-hop and midtempo genre of music. His unique sound design and bass lines have such a distinct sound that he has helped evolve the direction of where the music is today. Samples has matured his sound over recent years and help his local area of Denver/Boulder Colorado become one of the Mecca’s for bass music. His duo act with Greg Fisk, Fresh2Death, has toured all over the States and considered one of the best live shows around featuring live remixes. His energy, skill, and talent is unmatched when he steps behind the controls, it’s truly a performance more than anything. Choose You Own Adventure is Samples new album released by Made in Glitch. The title is baed on choose-your-own adventure children’s book series that became popular in 80s and 90s where you chose your own destiny. This 15 track release is just that, an adventure into the mind and world of a legendary bass warrior battling through the life of a rockstar. The album has chapters that bring a familiar nostalgic feel and others that take us on entirely new trip into new dimensions. You will never know what is around the corner but it’s one hell of a ride. Throw the album on shuffle and see how long you survive.” – AfroMonk

In an era where most artists simply churn out singles as fast as they can and then compile them together into EP’s, it is always a pleasant surprise to see an artist spend the time to put together a cohesive concept album. That is exactly what Samples has done for us with his Choose Your Own Adventure EP. Pick your adventure and enjoy the ride!

(Flyer by Berk Visual of ElmandOak.com)

Frequent-C aka Cody Yozipovic has really been establishing his vibrant new sound (As well as some Mile High Sound Movement love) around Colorado of late. With a show last Thursday with Robotic Pirate Monkeys and an upcoming show this Thursday, again at the Fox, playing alongside The Candyman as their collaborative project Slim Thugz. If you are at all able to make it to Boulder on Thursday, this is not a show to miss. Last Thursday Cody opened for Robotic Pirate Monkeys and absolutely stole the show. His stage swagger combined with sheer musicality put him far above the other acts of the night. On stage he captivates the crowd with his sheer personality as his normally calm and composed demeanor is completely dissolved by the rush of live performance. Cody is rapidly becoming a master at blending his own particular musical voice with every song or style he touches, making him highly adept at creating both Original tracks as well as top of the line remixes.

Not only is this weeks show another opportunity to see Frequent-C in his element, it is also the Debut performance of Slim Thugz. Cody and Candyman have collaborated on several songs before, and have a long-standing musical background. This show will be one for the history books, and hopefully a landmark in the Colorado 2010 music scene. Come out and support Frequent-C, a multi-talented artist, and contributing member of SubSynthesis’ cherished Mile High Sound Movement. Hope to see you all there!

+Verb: Xmas 2010 Mini-Mix (All Original)

I have to hand it to +verb, he is insanely prolific and all of his tracks are of the highest quality. +Verb tries to produce a track every day, and is one of those artists that has a library so full of unreleased tracks that he could play a set for as long as the time slot allowed. Many people would say that quality is preferable over quantity, but how can you complain when an artist is constantly putting out tracks, and each one is better than the last?

If you are a fan of +verb, or even if you haven’t heard any of his tracks yet, this +Verb Mini-Mix is one of the absolute necessities of 2010. I have been waiting for weeks for this release, and I must say that it did not disappoint in the slightest. Every track +verb produces is imbued with a part of him that makes it easily recognizable as his own, and frankly, most of his remixes end up as significantly better than the original. If you are looking for artists to follow as a prime example of someone leading and defining the movement, +verb is a perfect choice.

This MiniMix, a free gift from +verb to all of us as an early christmas present, is a perfect sample of the extroardinary work produced by this amazing artist. Many of his recent highlights are featured on the album, including Maltodextrin and his recent collaborations with Stephan Jacobs and Richard Sweat. Give it up for +Verb and check out all his new material, especially the MiniMix, it should keep you dancing long into 2011!

Concert Review #1: Project Aspect & PantyRaid

December 3 was an absolutely sold out night at the Boulder Theater. With a venue occupancy of around 1000, the show was an absolutely packed and wild party. Project Aspect started off the night at around 9pm, playing a fantastic all-original set and starting the show off on a more downtempo melodic note. In order to get the crowd ready for the insanity that was PantyRaid’s performance, Project Aspect worked the crowed into a wild frenzy with his increasingly crunk beats and energetic melodies. It is absolutely impossible to watch Project Aspect perform without being drawn into his presence on the stage. With seemingly the slightest of effort, he pours his heart and soul into every song, and you can always read his passion in the expression on his face. Project Aspect is no opener, if you have a chance to see him perform, take it!

PantyRaid came onstage at the perfect time for their performance. Composed of the all-star duo of Ooah (from the GlitchMob) and MartyParty, PantyRaid perfectly utilized the wild and frenetic energy raging through the crowd at the end of Project Aspect’s set. The duo had an amazing dynamic and it was clear from both their on-stage interactions as well as the quality of their set that they have great artistic chemistry. At the end of an extraordinary 2+ hour set during which multiple girls had to be “escorted” off stage and ejected as a result of their attempts to reach the energetic duo, Ooah finally announced his profound love for Boulder, Colorado, and the party of epic proportions that took place at the Boulder Theater the night of December 3.

(Ooah is on the Left, MartyParty is on the right)

Be sure to check out some of the new music put out by both MartyParty and Ooah, as well as Mile High Sound Movement’s very own Project Aspect!
