Sovereign-Sect: Fourtunate

“Hailing from the frozen Tundra of Fargo, Sovereign-Sect has taken the reins and pioneered one of the most underrated, vibrant live electronic scenes in the midwest. The Sect has played alongside such acts as Marty Party, Mimosa, Ana Sia, Kraddy, Two Fresh, Pnuma Trio, Signal Path, EOTO, SPECTRE, OTT, Nasty Nasty, Mochipet, Eprom, Eskmo, Lynx and Janover, Beats Antique, Propa Tingz, Unlimited Gravity, Fresh2Death and Vibesquad, and have become a staple for bass music lovers from hundreds of miles away. With the recent addition of two new members to the previous producer/drummer combo, Sovereign Sect is delving into new realms of live production and improvised digital controllerism – tactfully fusing live performance aspects of traditional bands with the dance-friendly, musical-riot-enducing elements hip-hop, and bass culture music. Sovereign Sect is a sonic phenomenon not to be missed” – Sovereign-Sect SoundCloud

I first heard about Sovereign-Sect from Unlimited Gravity who told me I should look into them for any future Colorado events. After communicating with them briefly and getting in touch with their friend Jeff Hild, I am completely convinced that Sovereign-Sect is going to be one of the big names in 2011.  Everyone reading this should swing by the Sovereign-Sect BandCamp and download their Free Debut EP, “Fourtunate”. The album has a wide variety of music on it, all of it excellent and perfect for getting a party started. Absolutely anyone, ranging from the private listener to the festival promoter, should have their eyes on Sovereign-Sect, this is an extremely talented group of artists with a rich musical background who are bringing a whole hell of a lot to the table. Don’t believe me? Check them out for yourself!

Sovereign-Sect – Pushin’ Rhymes:

Sovereign-Sect – Nickle & Dime:

Sovereign-Sect – Bucketgrinder:

Sovereign-Sect has been a staple in the electronic music scene for several years and has progressed through an array of musical stages to reach where they are now. What started as a funky jam-based band is now a party-raging electronic act embracing a  multitude of music elements and themes from the electronic world. The bands current formation consists of 4 members…. Chris Patano, Alex Schaleben, and Lucas Petz (All Producers) with Seth Holden on Drums.

The current manifestation of Sovereign-Sect started when Alex Schaleben and Lucas Petz decided to join forces with the other two of Sovereign Sect. Alex used to play percussion with the original five piece and Lucas was a new addition to the team. All of the members grew up in West Fargo, ND and are deeply embedded in the local music scene. The very first gig together with all four of the current members was at the Bella Vida Festival where they were recieved with wild cries and dancing crowds. The merge had a dramatic impact on the overall sound of the group and definitely gave it the more hyphy lazer-bass sound that you hear in some of the newer tracks like Big Ballin, Pushin Rhymes, and DMT Data. From there on out, the parties became wilder, the crowds got bigger, and Sovereign-Sect slowly started focusing on making a HUGE impact on the local electronic scene.

After only six months of working together they have already gained critical acclaim and have played with an exceptionally talented lineup of artists including Lynx and Janover, Fresh2Death, Mochipet, NastyNasty, Unlimited Gravity, Signal Path, Propatingz, and many more. If Sovereign-Sect plays a show, it is absolutely guaranteed that they will have the crowd going wild by the end of their set. No matter what slot Sovereign-Sect plays, they will depart with everyone thinking they were the headliner!

Check out some cool videos of their progression as a musical entity, featuring all stages of the bands evolution:

Sovereign-Sect Pre-Reformation (Jam/Funk)

Sovereign-Sect Mid-Reformation (Chris Patano and Seth Holden, summer 2009)

Sovereign-Sect Post-Reformation (At the Bella Vida Music Festival mentioned above)

…and of course, at one of Sovereign-Sects’ favorite spots to rage, Sovereign-Sect opening for Mochipet in 2010: they absolutely slay the crowd at this show!

Frequent-C: Concert Review + Upcoming Show!!!

(Flyer by Berk Visual of ElmandOak.com)

Frequent-C aka Cody Yozipovic has really been establishing his vibrant new sound (As well as some Mile High Sound Movement love) around Colorado of late. With a show last Thursday with Robotic Pirate Monkeys and an upcoming show this Thursday, again at the Fox, playing alongside The Candyman as their collaborative project Slim Thugz. If you are at all able to make it to Boulder on Thursday, this is not a show to miss. Last Thursday Cody opened for Robotic Pirate Monkeys and absolutely stole the show. His stage swagger combined with sheer musicality put him far above the other acts of the night. On stage he captivates the crowd with his sheer personality as his normally calm and composed demeanor is completely dissolved by the rush of live performance. Cody is rapidly becoming a master at blending his own particular musical voice with every song or style he touches, making him highly adept at creating both Original tracks as well as top of the line remixes.

Not only is this weeks show another opportunity to see Frequent-C in his element, it is also the Debut performance of Slim Thugz. Cody and Candyman have collaborated on several songs before, and have a long-standing musical background. This show will be one for the history books, and hopefully a landmark in the Colorado 2010 music scene. Come out and support Frequent-C, a multi-talented artist, and contributing member of SubSynthesis’ cherished Mile High Sound Movement. Hope to see you all there!

Ben Samples: DBS 3 Year Anniversary Set

Here he is being featured yet again, the exceptionally prolific Ben Samples. Last Friday I went to the DBS 3 year anniversary event at City Hall in Denver, and Samples, the new head of the Denver Bass Squad, played an absolutely killer set during dinner. The event started off with a Potluck during which Willy Whompa and Samples set the mood of the event. Taking a break from his usual dance-floor slayers, Samples toned down his set to create the perfect eating environment. If you want to support DBS, hear some new tracks by the Legendary Ben Samples, or simply have a set to play while chilling around the house, check out the new Samples live set!

Mile High Christmas!!!!

(Flyer Courtesy Cloud-D)

I saw Project Aspect play City Hall IMPACT night last night with Salva, Ben Samples, Drop Logik, and Willy Whompa. Everyone who played was fantastic, but Project Aspect aka Jay Jaramillo absolutely stole the show. His all-original set had the emotion and intensity of live instrumentation and the energy and hype of a veteran professional. Do NOT miss out on a chance to see Project Aspect and his Mile High Sound Movement collaborators tear it up on Christmas Night. If you are going to be in Denver for Christmas, this is the PLACE TO BE! The lineup is huge, including headliner Love and Light, as well as the Mile High Sound Movement lineup and some great local talent.

Frequent-C (Mega-Post)

So it came to my attention that I made a critical error in my Mile High Sound Movement feature. Somehow I failed to mention new member Frequent-C aka Cody Yozipovic. This is not a slight oversight, Cody, yet another brilliant artist out of the Boulder, Colorado area, is not one to be overlooked. “As a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter stemming from a broad musical background, Frequent-C’s sound is not limited to only one genre. With heavy influences in jazz, hip-hop, and dub while incorporating live guitar, keyboards, and beat production in a live and studio setting, the music that resonates is a constantly evolving collective of different musical genres that makes each live performance different from the last.” – Frequent-C SoundCloud

In order to make up for forgetting Cody in my previous update, I am going to give you all a special treat straight from Frequent-C himself. Calling his unique and versatile style “Jazzstep”, cody incorporates all the beloved elements of glitch and dub while managing to maintain a more chilled-out jazzy feel. This unique blend makes for a style of music as comfortable in the headphones doing work as it is at a party on the dancefloor. As the body of artists producing electronic music increases rapidly, those shining stars with true musical talent beyond the ability to construct a simple track finally begin to emerge. Frequent-C, like all members of the awesome Mile High Sound Movement, is one of these musical shining stars.

For a great general overview of his style, check out his “Islands” Fall Promo Mix, it features some great originals, and gives you a good idea of what inspires Frequent-C.
